Educational Market Research

The Arise team has surveyed 100 schools in Uganda to understand their curriculum choices, their fee structure, their locations, and their facilities. As a proof-of-concept school, we will not be directly competing with any of these schools. It is however useful to understand the current educational market if Arise is to challenge current methods.

Enough Schools?

Uganda has so many schools! There are large international schools with expensive fees and excellent facilities. There are government schools that struggle with huge classes and poor teaching methods. There are also an amazing number of privately operated schools that range wildly in effectiveness and cost. Find out what makes Master’s Academy & College Uganda different.

Education Costs

Of the 100 schools surveyed by the Integrity Education team, fees ranged wildly. Clearly the education being provided at each school varies highly as well. Actual costs for education and boarding per term ranged:

Least Expensive: $32 USD
Most Expensive: $9,475 USD

Class Sizes

In communication with local youth, Integrity Education is told of schools frequently having classes of more than 100 students. It seems likely that these individuals are referring to government run schools which have a poor reputation and were not included in our survey.

Schools we surveyed reported class sizes ranging from 8 to 80 students with an average class size of 31.

Land Size

Each school surveyed reported the total amount of land they held. The smallest lot size for a school was a 50’x50′ lot while the largest was 20 acres. The average land size was calculated to be almost 3 acres.

The Integrity Education team is aiming to acquire between 20 and 50 acres of land to support the Primary school and eventual Secondary school.

School Amenities

As with all our research, the facilities offered by each school vary widely. Many schools offer nothing more than classes and a basic play ground area. Others provide access to books and computers. A few offer excellent facilities such as pools and other sports facilities.

Of the 100 schools we surveyed, only 11 reported some sort of library facilities.

Boarding Facilities

Almost all schools in Uganda offer boarding for students. It is not unusual for parents to board their children even in early grades.

While we cannot declare a definitive reason for this, it seems clear that this avoids long days for the family as schools are often long commutes from home. It may also be that this arangement allows the family to minimize or fix living expenses.

School Location

The Arise Education team has also surveyed the cost of land around Kampala. Sending a research team out each major road, we cataloged land for sale that met some basic criteria.

Considerations

As a prototype school, the Integrity Education team sees benefit in making access to the school easy. Some considerations we are applying to our location search include:

Travel time from the airport should be less than 2 hours if possible. This will provide partners, missions, educators and local authorities with timely access.
The school should be visible from or very close to a primary road making it visible and easy to find.
The minimum land size available should be 20 acres with access to additional acreage at a later date.

Location

There doesn’t seem to be a specific area that is best for schools to be located. There are popular schools located in almost any direction surrounding Kampala.

Kampala is laid out similar to a hub-and-spoke model where Kampala lies at the center (the hub) and a number of major roads (the spokes) take traffic to and from the city. Traffic is highly congested on many of these major roads.

Finding a location close to Kampala is important as the schools primary student population will be sourced from the city. Locating ourselves on the least congested road will help families reach us.
